“In Case of Emergency”: Post Performance Supper
Sunday January 25th
Doors open at 6pm; Supper, punctuated by three short talks, starts at 7pm
With much regret, due to legal issues, we have had to cancel this event. Please accept our apologies.
"In Case of Emergency: the Medics Trial" is a new verbatim drama about the trial of six medics. Playing at the Southbank Centre’s Purcell Room, it is a story of protest, courage, care and hope.
We’re hosting a special dinner at Kairos after the final performance on Sunday January 25th. This is an invitation for anyone who attended the play to come and discuss the themes it raises, along with the cast and the production team.
In June 2024, in a courtroom in East London, six medics stood trial for causing criminal damage. Or, as they argued, for trying to preserve human life and prevent suffering.
Although CCTV footage clearly showed them cracking the windows of investment bank J P Morgan, they nonetheless pleaded “not guilty”. What drove this group of highly-respected doctors and nurses to take this action? And would the members of the jury, once they’d heard the medics’ reasoning, move to acquit?
"In Case of Emergency" is a collaboration between playwright April De Angelis, director Ian Rickson, artist Clare Patey of the Empathy Museum, and journalist Robert Butler who attended the trial.
The medics’ defence, upon which the play is based, is among the most urgent, personal and persuasive arguments recorded on the subject of public health and climate breakdown.
Over a three-course sit-down vegan meal, we’ll discuss the law, protest, climate breakdown, public health and the role of culture in transforming society - sharing our feelings and responses to the play and our ideas for ways forward. Before each course, we’ll hear a five minute talk to stimulate discussion. Speakers will be Sally Weintrobe, a psychoanalyst who writes about climate breakdown, and two others to be confirmed.
Tickets are priced on a sliding scale according to means and include a welcome drink and a simple three course vegan supper with wine. Additional drinks will be available from the pay bar.
