Navigating Collapse, Reclaiming Freedom with Jem Bendell

THIS EVENT IS NOW FULL. IF YOU'D LIKE TO BE PUT ON THE WAITING LIST PLEASE EMAIL EVENTS@KAIROS.LONDON

Thursday July 20th, 6.45pm
St Ethelburga's Centre for Reconciliation and Peace, Bishopsgate EC2

Monetary systems have driven us to harm each other and nature to such an extent that the foundations of our societies are broken. So much so, that the collapse of modern societies has already begun. That is the conclusion of two years of research by the interdisciplinary team behind Jem Bendell's new book "Breaking Together".

In this talk with discussion, Jem will argue that to soften the fall and regenerate the natural world we have to reclaim our freedoms. He will warn that panicking elites will respond with moves towards authoritarianism. But that we still can, and must, advance an ecolibertarian agenda for both politics and practical action in a broken world.

Jem is a professor at the University of Cumbria and the co-Founder of the International Scholars’ Warning on Societal Disruption and Collapse. His 2018 paper "Deep Adaptation" was downloaded over a million times and is widely credited with helping inspire the growth of the Extinction Rebellion movement. This new book "Breaking Together" goes further by outlining a collapse-based political framework.

"Breaking Together" is available here and will be free to download as an ebook after July 10th.

The talk will be followed by supper and discussion.
