Join us for an evening of music and folklore with Mataio Austin Dean, best known as a member of the traditional music group Shovel Dance Collective, accompanied by Ula Taylor-Reilly.

Mataio and Ula will perform a short set of traditional English folksongs, interpreted through a radical lens. After a break for supper there’ll be a chance to learn some songs and join a sing along.

Saturday April 18th, 6.30 for 7pm

Join us for Bint Mbareh’s “Choir for Non-Musicians”, an evening of vocal connection designed for people who use their voices verbally, but not musically.

Bint – whose research into folklore in Palestine has schooled her in technologies which transmit the voice, its history and the knowledge it carries – will gently guide us through a series of experimental vocal exercises: whispering illegible sentences in unison, clapping in extreme synchronisation at different speeds, conducting one another, translating one another’s gibberish, finding echoes, repeating passages of text in unison, and more. Non-musicians are warmly invited; All levels of vocal confidence welcomed. Participants need only bring themselves.

Bint is a sound researcher with a focus on water in Palestine. Her interest in the physical parallel between the water wave and the sound wave leads her into questions of border dissolutions (between bodies, between states, between tenses), and into the possibility of being enveloped by the voice, by sounding communally, like being enveloped by a water body. She challenges settler-colonial epistemology by taking seriously Palestinian ways of knowing, from rain-summoning music to shrine pilgrimage as an instigator of political revolution.

Friday April 10th, 6 for 7pm

Join us for a joyful evening of comedy and music with Jessie Maryon Davies. Jessie’s playful set of original and self deprecating songs like “Splashing the Patriarchy” and a “Lament for a Squashed Snail” will draw upon her years of experience as a choral leader, musical director and community energiser.

Following her performance, there’ll be a chance to take part in writing a brand new song that will challenge our self esteem and deepen our collective creativity. After the songwriting session, at around 8.15, there will be a one-pot vegan supper served at the bar.

Join us for a one-off Kairos Ceilidh special. Swing, spin, and stomp your way through a joyful evening of Ceilidh dancing with Ewan King and the Heath Street Irregulars, a local band accompanied by caller Jo Bowis.

Jo and the Irregulars will guide us through lively traditional sets, with the opportunity to learn a range of dances. Whether you’re a seasoned ceilidh enthusiast or a complete beginner, Jo will make sure everyone feels welcome and confident as the night unfolds.

We’ll be dancing and playing music all evening, with a short break for dinner at 8pm. Come ready to move and meet new people.

Friday March 13th, 6.30pm for 7.30pm

Join us for an evening of performance and song with writer and actor Amanda Douge. Her literary performance “Rosa Luxemburg and I” aims to release the radical, ecological imagination towards new, revolutionary ways of being.

In this piece, historical figure and socialist revolutionary Rosa Luxemburg becomes a conduit for reflection on earth systems damage, the capitalist status quo and eco-socialist potentials. The performance asks: can our individual “I” find its way to climate revolution and solidarity?

For her Kairos performance, a celebration for International Women’s Day, Amanda will be joined by classical singer Amy Kearsley. Amy, who recently completed her postgraduate vocal studies at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, will perform works by Polish and German composers of the romantic period, including settings of Rosa’s favoured poets Goethe and Adam Mickiewicz.

Klezmer Foygl, which means “Klezmer Songbird” in Yiddish, is a new ensemble playing both traditional and original Klezmer repertoire. Led by Clarinettist John Macnaughton, the group is rooted in traditional Yiddish music, while adding an innovative, contemporary London twist to its sound. John will be joined by Josh Middleton on accordion and Theo Malka-Wishart on double bass.

The band will play a 40 minute set, followed by a break for supper and the opportunity to learn some songs and traditional dance steps. For a taste of their music, visit Klezmer Foygl’s YouTube channel.

Talulah creates bilingual blends of acoustic and electronic sound to explore her native Welsh identity. She is part of the new wave of artists emerging from Wales. For her Kairos set, Talulah will be singing, combining her mix of ethereal neo-soul, folk and jazz with story-telling and insights from her research into Welsh minority language revival. She will be accompanied by percussionist Wynn Tasker and Judah Daniels on piano. 

Talulah won the Triskel Award at the 2023 Welsh Music Prize. She has performed at Green Man, FOCUS Wales, Sŵn Festival, Fifty Lab Festival in Brussels, Brecon International Jazz Festival and Yardbird Jazz. You can listen to her debut EP “Solas” on Spotify.

The second of our Friday Music Nights will feature the Brazilian sounds and rhythms of Born to Bossa. The group will perform a relaxed set at 7.45pm, followed by a short percussion workshop and the chance to join in. We’ll then serve a vegan one pot supper at the bar. The bar will then stay open for drinks until 11pm. Entry is free after 8.30pm if you just want to come for a drink or some food.

Born To Bossa, a London-based Brazilian music project led by guitarist, vocalist and musical director Dave Holmes, takes classic bossa nova and brings it up to date. Drawing on Dave’s experience performing across both Europe and Brazil, the group has a rich repertoire of classic bossa nova alongside carefully reworked English-language songs and original material.

Dave will be joined by soul, jazz, funk and blues singer Carole Therese Beausaint. Carole, who was raised in North London, has been shaped both by her Dominican heritage and by years performing in Amsterdam’s diverse music scene

Dave and Carole will perform a few Bossa Nova songs, followed by a short Brazilian percussion and samba workshop, and the chance to join the jam.

Friday January 9th, 6.30pm for 7.45pm

The first of our new Friday Music Nights will feature oud player Kareem Samara. Kareem will perform a half hour set at 7.45pm, after which we’ll serve a vegan one pot supper at the bar. The bar will then stay open for drinks until 11pm. Entry is free after 8.30pm if you just want to come for a drink.

Kareem combines the Oud and Arabic percussion with loopers and samplers “to create a dialogue between himself and technology, traditions and the future. He pushes the limits of what is expected of an instrument weighed down by generations of expectation, exploring every inch of the Oud to create a modern soundworld, where archival interviews and field recordings connect struggles and timelines, interweaving melodies that strive to be free of borders.”

Kareem has performed and collaborated with artists including Nadah El Shazly, Ayman Asfour, Goat Girl, Ryan Harvey, Tom Morello, Tashi Dorji, Kinn, Matt Cargill, Fatima Laham and Bint Mbareh. He most recently composed the music for Radio 4s “The Yaffa Cherry Orchard”.

Friday October 31st, 6.30pm to 11pm, Performance at 7.45pm

Friday night is now our music and entertainments night, when we feature short musical sets, comedy acts and other entertainment and artistic offerings.

The first Friday in our new series will feature Fools Leap, a music project created by artist/performer and Kairos regular Orlando Seale, in which he’s joined by a fluid group of collaborators. At the core of the project is unknowing, listening and improvisation.

Orlando and his guests will share “Into Something Rich and Strange”.  A collage of songs and poems inspired by Ariel’s song from Shakespeare’s The Tempest, the 30 minute piece explores themes of transformation, cycles in life, mystery, fooling and dreaming.

Orlando will be joined by musicians Alice Dyson (violin and voice), Patricia Ramirez (viola) and Tom Curzon (double-bass and voice) and Tom Dyson (piano).
